Badger Students Eating Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
Posted on 09/01/2017

Badger School is participating in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) again this school year. The FFVP provides all children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables.

The purpose of the FFVP is to increase elementary school children’s consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, to expose elementary school students to new fruits and vegetables, to improve healthy eating habits and, to help elementary schools create healthier school food environments.

Schools are selected by the Wisconsin DPI, based on guidance and oversight by USDA. Section 19(d) of the National School Lunch Act states the selection criteria for schools to participate in this program:

  • To the maximum extent possible, highest priority will be given to schools with the HIGHEST proportion of children who are eligible for free and reduced price meals.
  • Schools must be elementary schools, or have the ability to separate out elementary school students in a K-12 program.
  • Schools must operate the National School Lunch Program.
  • Schools must have 50% or more of its students eligible for free/reduced price meals.

All Badger students will be offered a different (free) fresh fruit or vegetable snack each school day (served outside of the lunch and breakfast periods). There will be a different menu for each month of the school year.

Badger is one of five AASD elementary schools participating in the FFVP for the 2017-2018 school year. The other schools are Columbus, Horizons, Jefferson, and Lincoln.

FFVP is offered during the school day, outside of the lunch and breakfast periods (and not during summer school)
